Prospect Foundation Statement

The Taiwan Affairs Office of the People’s Republic of China on Friday announced the imposition of sanctions against the Prospect Foundation. We strongly regret this decision by the Chinese authorities.

It has come to our notice that the PRC in recent years has repeatedly imposed sanctions against individuals and organizations in Taiwan and internationally. We believe that such measures not only do not help promote exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait and between China and the world, but also create obstacles for communication between China and the outside world. We urge the Beijing authorities to abandon this practice as soon as possible.

The Prospect Foundation will continue to uphold the spirit of academic independence and defend Taiwan’s sovereignty, engage in exchanges and cooperation with the international community, and remain willing to communicate with scholars and academic institutions in Mainland China. Our principles will not change as a result of this latest announcement by Beijing.
