Abstract

From the Obama Administration onward, cybersecurity has represented a lingering and thorny conflict between the U.S. and China. Chinese cyberespionage activities pose a serious challenge to the U.S. national security interests. By the same token, American intelligence has conducted extensive internet and phone surveillance on the Chinese government and Huawei. The Chinese government denies its involvement in cyberspace intrusions but agreed to a five-point consensus on cybersecurity cooperation with the United States. President Obama preferred building a bilateral cybersecurity dialogue mechanism to defuse the tension with China. President Donald Trump has chosen an approach of linking cybersecurity issues with the trade negotiations. China seeks international norms of cybersecurity under the United Nations system and sought confidence-building measures on cybersecurity with the United States. Whether China and the U.S. can reach certain norms regarding operations in cyberspace remains to be seen.

U.S.-China Trade War and the Trend of U.S.-China-Taiwan Relations

Abstract

U.S.-China relations is the most important influence on U.S.-China-Taiwan triangle. Currently, the trend of US-China relations is influenced by the U.S.-China trade war from 2017. However, the trade war is just a symbol of competition. For the nature of US-China relations, we could use the so-called Thucydides’s Trap as a framework. After the trend of U.S.-China relations are defined, we can more easily observe the influence of the “Spiral Model” on cross-Strait relations and the role of the “Alliance Trap” on Taiwan-U.S. relations. If there exists a bad situation of these three traps, it quite possibly could cause war. Nevertheless, based on the finding of this paper, the relations between the U.S. and China have not indulged in the Thucydides’s Trap but they have become worse than before. This could make the cross-Strait relations harder to escape from the “Spiral Model” and make it more likely to cause an “Alliance Trap” between Taiwan and the U.S.

Abstract

This study uses a textual reading of the Mainland China Television drama “My Native Land”, to investigate Taiwan’s military dependents’ villages and the Taiwan Garrison Command (TGC), as reconstructed in the series. The series was the first filmed work that uses a Mainland mainstream viewpoint to narrate Taiwan veterans’ home visiting. The officially-censored content is sufficient to robustly demonstrate how the Mainland imagines the culture of Taiwan. As a result, there is a specific academic interest in performing a textual reading of this series. This study shows that the “My Native Land” production unit intentionally expanded the role played by the TGC in the struggles of veterans as they attempted to return home and visit their relatives. As a result, returning home to visit relatives becomes a political tangle of conflict and gamesmanship. This study also finds that the “My Native Land” production unit intentionally appropriated a certain number of Taiwanese historical events, which were then altered and blended into the plot.
